Sun 3.6. 17.00 GARTENTHEATER
COMPOSITIONS BY CHARLES IVES, JOHN CORIGLIANO, LEONARD BERNSTEIN, JOHN CAGE AND OTHERS
The newly discovered continent was soon named “America“ and remained a symbol of hope over several centuries – for those who found Europe too narrow and for those who were unable to find freedom. Of course, we now know today that Columbus first set foot on an island in the Bahamas and thereby triggered off the era of globalisation. Although the New World has in the meantime become very old, new worlds have unfortunately not materialised for mankind.
The open air concert with the young exceptional percussionist Martin Grubinger allows the American Dream of yesteryear to be reborn. America’s notorious forward-looking perspective which does not permit itself to be spoon-fed by foreign entities, created a whole battalion of tonal pioneers in the twentieth century which make the contemporary music of Europe seem fairly antiquated in comparison. It was however the voices of the African cotton-pickers which initially gave America its original musical voice. This concert of blue notes soon became blended with the kindred sighs of Jewish immigrants as blues music embarked on its path to Broadway.
