COMPOSITIONS BY HILDEGARD VON BINGEN, BENJAMIN BRITTEN, HARRISON BIRTWISTLE, STEVIE WISHART

Around the middle of the twelfth century, Hildegard of Bingen composed music giving expression to ecstatic visions in a reflection on the heavenly harmony of creation.
Two first-class choral ensembles come together in a project devoted to the music of the German mystic: the 26 voices of the BBC Singers and Stevie Wishart’s ensemble “Sinfonye”.
Hildegard’s songs from the “Symphonia harmonie celestium revelationum” have been incorporated into a number of English works composed in our time. Each composer has searched for an individual approach to Hildegard’s era with its contemporary world concepts: Benjamin Britten’s “Sacred and Profane” (1974), Harrison Birtwistle’s “Narrations” (1963) and Stevie Wishart’s own composition which was created specifically for this project and integrates traditional improvisation techniques into an interpretation of this ancient music.
