CHAMBER OPERA ON A TEXT BY EBERHARD STREUL AND MUSIC BY ANDREAS N. TARKMANN

We know little about the origins of Henry Purcell’s opera Dido und Aeneas. The first known performance of the work took place in a girls’ boarding school in the London borough of Chelsea.
Eberhard Streul’s libretto depicts a modern-day boarding school in which the pupils are also involved in rehearsing Purcell’s opera. Involuntarily, the conflicts of the opera plot become transferred to the participants and the mythical drama of the abandoned Dido is recreated within a modern context.
Didos Geheimnis, written for the award-winning girls’ choir Mädchenchor Hanover, triggered off great storms of enthusiasm at its first performance in September 2011. The cast involves 170 young female singers: the solo roles are sung by former choral members who are currently singing students.
