COMPOSITIONS BY ROBERT SCHUMANN, JOHANNES BRAHMS, ALBERT DIETRICH
AND MANFRED TROJAHN, JOSÉ MARÍA SÁNCHEZ-VERDÚ, STEFAN JOHANNES HANKE

In 1853, Robert Schumann, then living in Düsseldorf, composed the Sonata “F-A-E” in collaboration with Johannes Brahms and his student Albert Dietrich. It was meant as a collective gift to their friend Joseph Joachim, working in Hannover. Its musical motif “f-a-e” is based on Joachim’s life motto “Frei, aber einsam” (Free but lonely). Three modern composers, all living in Düsseldorf but each having personal ties to Hannover, repeat this experiment in musically meditating over the meaning that “Free but lonely” bears to them.
