VINKO GLOBOKAR: LABORATORIUM
MUSIKPERFORMANCE
Ensemble LABORATORIUM

FOR 10 MUSICIANS, ELEKTRONIC AND A COORDINATOR (1973–1984)

Why do we make music and who are we making it for? What relationship does the performer have with his instrument, to the composer, to his fellow musicians and to his audience? Globokar has been keeping a composed diary which addresses these types of musical philosophical questions within his cycle LABORATORIUM for the last twelve years. This has developed into a daring musical monument with its musical love of freedom and a humour comparable only with Beethoven.
55 pieces are bundled together to show what music could be if it was not forced to remain how we think it should be. Within the framework of a complete performance, many of these pieces are played simultaneously. The audience is free to move around the auditorium as though at an exhibition.
Vinko Globokar, the son of Slovenian immigrants, is one of the major composers of the European avant-garde. The members of the Ensemble LABORATORIUM originate from fifteen nations and five continents.
