HERRENHAUSEN DIALOGUES

The Herrenhausen Dialogues presented by the foundation VolkswagenStiftung and the broadcaster NDR Kultur focus on current topics for discussion within the fields of science and culture which have relevance for our society. Herrenhausen is therefore following on according to the intentions of Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz as a location for intellectual discourse which will encourage the general public to engage in lively discussion and reflection well beyond the city limits of Hanover.

FRAGILE BALANCE – HOW DO WE COPE WITH INSECURITY?

Since the beginning of the twenty-first century, we have experienced a virtually unbroken series of catastrophes, crises and strokes of fate of all types. The forces of nature, the striving for economic power and religious fanaticism have robbed us of our feelings of security across the globe. As soon as we think we have succeeded in re-establishing a certain balance, the next disaster is waiting to strike around the next corner.

Participants in the discussion include: Prof. Dr. Claudia Kemfert, energy economist, German Institute for Economic Research [DIW] and Hertie School of Governance Berlin
Prof. Dr. Wolf Rüdiger Dombrowsky, disaster sociologist, Steinbeis-Hochschule Berlin
Prof. Dr. Jan-Michael Rost, physicist, MPI for the Physics of complex systems

50 YEARS OF THE ROLLING STONES – AND WHAT ROCKS TODAY?

When Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Brian Jones and Ian Stewart performed for the first time in the Marquee Club in London on 12 July 1962, nobody could have imagined that this would mark the beginning of currently more than fifty years of rock history. The rapid rise of the “bad boys” began: a counterculture rebelling against the conformity and insufferable boredom of the early 1960s. How can the social-cultural phenomenon of the Rolling Stones be explained and what rocks today?
