DANIEL OTT: FOUNTAIN 16/6
MUSIKPERFORMANCE (UA)
Daniel Ott

MUSIC PIECE FOR GREAT FOUNTAIN, FOUR PERCUSSIONISTS AND LOUDSPEAKER UNIT

The Swiss composer Daniel Ott’s activities also retain a close connection with perception as seen through the eye and he frequently incorporates the existing reality of an exterior ambience into his compositions. “Fountain 16/6” makes reference to Marcel Duchamp’s artistic object “Fountain” dating from 1917 and its appeal of not misusing art as an escape from reality. Ott’s paraphrase focuses both eyes and ears on the existential fundamental element with which Duchamp was also playing and broaches the issue of the global social problems associated with the distribution of water. “Fountain 16/6” is a contemporary “Water Music” composed for a Baroque garden in which the garden idyll of the large fountain is interrupted at regular intervals by a variety of tonal and optical interventions.
